Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Mumbai is one of the regional directorates under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India. The Mumbai Directorate administers 23 Lighthouses in Maharashtra and Southern Gujarat Coast spanning from Rajapur Bay Lighthouse to Luhara Point Lighthouse covering a coastal distance of approximately 1200 Kilometres. The Directorate office is situated at Deep Bhavan, M.G Road, Ghatkopar (E), Mumbai. Deep Bhavan, Mumbai houses the National Data Centre, Coastal Control Centre (West), Regional Control Centre for 19 Physical Shore Station (PSS) of Mumbai and Goa Directorate of National Automatic Identification System Network, and Control Centre of National NAVTEX network. The DGPS central monitoring station, Bhandup is also functioning under the administrative control of the Mumbai Directorate.
Mumbai Mumbai’s coastline, stretching along the Arabian Sea, is among the busiest maritime zones of India. Home to the country’s premier commercial port and numerous minor ports, this region handles dense maritime traffic — from massive cargo ships and oil tankers to coastal vessels and fishing boats. The approaches to Mumbai’s harbours, with their rocky outcrops, shoals, and tidal variations, demand reliable navigation support. The Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Mumbai, ensures that vessels entering and leaving these waters can do so safely and efficiently. The Directorate maintains a network of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and modern electronic aids, each positioned to provide critical guidance in coastal, harbour, and offshore areas. These aids are particularly vital in safeguarding navigation during adverse weather, fog, and the monsoon season, when visibility and sea conditions are challenging. As a regional office under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), working within the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Mumbai Directorate plays a central role in securing the maritime gateways of western India.
