Jakhau lighthouse is one of the major lighthouses and VTS radar station under Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, VTS Directorate Gandhidham. This lighthouse station came into existence in 1957 when large scale salt pans were developed at Jakhau. Port of Jakhau was revived and developed to handle the export of raw salt to Japan, Korea and other countries. Therefore, providing a major lighthouse at Jakhau became essential. The light operating on DA gas in 500mm lantern with cut and polished drum optic with AGA flasher was installed on MS trestle tower in 1957. Later, circular RCC Lighthouse tower of 45 mtrs height was constructed in 1965 and the light equipment, 375 mm (3rd order small) revolving type supplied by M/s Stone Chance, Birmingham was installed and commissioned on 1st April 1965. The emergency source, capillary tube (Alladin Lamp) was replaced by LPG burner in 1993 and thereafter replaced by 12V, 100W Halogen lamp in 1996 which was replaced by incandescent lamp 1500W, 100V in 1999. Also, a Racon was installed on the tower in Sept 1999. The incandescent lamp was replaced by cluster of three 150W, 230 V Metal Halide lamps with a direct drive system by stepper motor in May 2004.

Subsequently, with the development of Vessel Traffic Services in Gulf of Kutch, a separate circular RCC tower of 60 mtrs height was constructed for installation of X-band and S-band radars and other VTS equipments which commissioned into service on 13 Feb 2012.
