Mumbai’s coastline, stretching along the Arabian Sea, is among the busiest maritime zones of India. Home to the country’s premier commercial port and numerous minor ports, this region handles dense maritime traffic — from massive cargo ships and oil tankers to coastal vessels and fishing boats. The approaches to Mumbai’s harbours, with their rocky outcrops, shoals, and tidal variations, demand reliable navigation support. The Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Mumbai, ensures that vessels entering and leaving these waters can do so safely and efficiently. The Directorate maintains a network of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and modern electronic aids, each positioned to provide critical guidance in coastal, harbour, and offshore areas. These aids are particularly vital in safeguarding navigation during adverse weather, fog, and the monsoon season, when visibility and sea conditions are challenging. As a regional office under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), working within the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Mumbai Directorate plays a central role in securing the maritime gateways of western India.
