Cochin

Cochin Cochin’s maritime zone is marked by its unique blend of backwaters, island chains, and a bustling coastline that opens into the Arabian Sea. This region has long served as a hub for seafarers, traders, and fishing communities, with vessels of all sizes making their way through its complex waterways and harbour entrances. The Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Cochin, is tasked with ensuring that this vibrant marine corridor remains safe for navigation. From historic lighthouses to advanced electronic aids, the Directorate manages systems that help guide ships, boats, and fishing crafts through busy channels, narrow approaches, and offshore routes — particularly during the southwest monsoon, when conditions at sea can become hazardous.Working under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL) and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Cochin Directorate plays an essential role in supporting trade, fisheries, and passenger transport along Kerala’s shores and the Lakshadweep archipelago.
