Vishakhapatnam

VISHAKHAPATNAM The Visakhapatnam region forms a significant part of India’s eastern coastline along the Bay of Bengal. Known for its strategic importance, this coastal belt hosts bustling ports, fishing harbours, and industrial hubs that contribute substantially to the region’s economy. The waters here witness constant activity, with cargo vessels, fishing boats, and passenger crafts navigating both nearshore and deep-sea routes. To ensure the safety and efficiency of maritime movement, the Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Visakhapatnam, provides essential navigational assistance through a network of Aids to Navigation (AtoNs). These include lighthouses and modern electronic systems positioned at key locations along the coast, helping mariners navigate safely through busy shipping channels and treacherous coastal stretches. The Directorate operates as a regional office under the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships (DGLL), functioning under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India. Its services are critical in supporting safe passage for vessels engaged in trade, fishing, and other marine activities along this vital part of India’s east coast.
