Ruvapari lighthouse is about 2 Km away from Bhavnagar new port and is approach le by walk during
low tide. It is about 11 Km North by sea from Ghogha Lighthouse, on the port hand side of the
Bhavnagar channel leading to the old port (now closed due to silting). This lighthouse bears the
name of a nearby village Ruvapari.
Prior to the present wooden structure, there was a 40 feet wrought iron tapering mast fixed on a
screw pile. It was erected in 1891. A wick lamp was hoisted from this mast by operation of a winch
fitted in the cabin.
In 1920 the region experienced heavy cyclone, which destroyed the lighthouse structure
completely. Bhavnagar State Port deptt swiftly planned a new structure. It took up the work
immediately and completed the wooden structure standing on 16 Burma teak piles each 450mm in
diameter by February 1922. The new equipment consisting of 200 mm optic, lantern, kerosene wick
burner supplied by M/s Chance Bros, Birmingham was installed together with a winch for hoisting.
The equipment was put into operation in March 1922. The structure consists of a large wooden hut
with corrugated sheet roofing on a wooden deck, safely above high tide water level. The light is
hoisted with the help of a winch on a column with guide rails rising out of a trap door provided in
the roof of the hut. The same kerosene wick lamp remained in service till 1994, when it was
replaced by electronic flasher and halogen lamp operating on solar powered battery. The new
system was commissioned in December 1994.
