Alang has acquired significance due to the ship-breaking yard established in 1985. About 80 ships
are beached at Alang every year for breaking. It is connected by an all weather road to Bhavnagar
about 50 Km away.
This lighthouse is an important landmark for entering the Gulf of Khambhat. Earlier a light on a 14 m
high steel frame structure was provided in 1933 at Mithivirdi about 10 Km East of Alang. It
functioned till May 1965. The construction of the tower at Alang was taken up in 1963 and on
completion a 4ª order optical equipment with 55mm PV burner, supplied by M/s BBT Paris was
installed. The light was commissioned in August 1965. A baffle wall for the fog signal was also
constructed and sound vibrators (BBT) after installation were put into operation at the same time.
The fog signal service was withdrawn in 1987.
The 55mm burner was replaced by 35mm burner following a fire accident in 1978. The PV system
was replaced by electric light, incandescent lamp 1000W 230V in May 1992 and the stepper motor
for driving the optic assembly was integrated in May 1994. The incandescent lamp was replaced by
150W 230V metal halide lamp and emergency source by 100W 12V halogen lamp in April 1998. This
was replaced by cluster of three 150W 230V Metal Halide lamps in December 2003.
A Racon transmitting code 'C' was installed at the station in October 1999 which was replaced by
Tideland make Racon in August 2004.
