    The first lighthouse was constructed in Pondicherry by the French Govt. in March 1836 and the lighthouse said to be the first lighthouse in coromandal coast. The lighthouse was erected by french engineer L. Guerre. The 29 Meter tall lighthouse comprise with 12 oil lamps magnified by lenses and mirrors and the light was visible at a distance of 14 Nautical Miles. In 1913, the oil lamps were replaced by an electrical rotating battery-powered beam that could be seen 21 Nautical Miles away. The lighthouse had first beamed light on 1st September 1836 and it was deactivated in 1979.

    Further, the Directorate of Lighthouses and Lightships, Government of India started the construction of new lighthouse in the 7th December 1975 and completed in 31st March 1979.The 49 Meter tall new lighthouse has beamed its first light since 10th December 1979. The first light beacon was Incandescent lamp of 1.5Kw / 100 V. Later on, the then illuminating source has been replaced by 400W/230V Metal Hallide lamp. The Range of light visibility is 41.7 NM @ 0.85 a.t.f and 25.7 NM @ 0.74 a.t.f.
