The Agatti island also known as ‘Gateway of Lakshadweep’ is at a distance of 459km(248NM) from Kochi and is located the west of Kavaratti Island. Total geographical area of the island is 3.84 sq. km. An airport is also there at the island and is 6.2 km from Agatti Lighthouse. There is regular air service from Bangalore via Kochi up to Agatti island. And is well connected with the southwest Indian coast by waterways. Agatti Island has regular sailings of Machine cum Sailing vessels for Mangalore and Beypore ports for the purpose of export of island products and import of grains and other essential items. There was n‟t any Lighthouse provided on the island earlier. The tall coconut palm trees, length and shape of the island used to serve as the guide to navigation. A mast was provided at the entrance of lagoon. With the increase in marine activities the need for a regular Lighthouse was felt. A light on 15m high wooden trestle tower was commissioned on 25th May 1976. It was a DA gas equipment in 300 mm optic with sun valve. In 1985 a 30m high GI trestle supplied by M/s Kerala Electrical & Allied Industries, Cochin, was erected and 500mm optical equipment with DA gas burner from LH workshop, Madras, was commissioned into operation on 28th February 1986. Under the programme of modernization, the DA gas equipment was replaced by „Jyoti Punj‟ electronic flasher (JLWL) on 7th November 1995.
