The Lighthouse bears its name after the Gopnath Mahadev temple situated nearby on sea
and is about a km from the road that links temple to Talaja town on Bhavnagar-Veraval highway.
This territory prior to independence was under Bhavnagar state. Their Port Department built
a circular stone masonry tower at Gopnath point in 1878-79. A dioptric apparatus with mirrors and
a wick burner, supplied by M/s Chance Bros, Birmingham was installed in the lantern house on this
tower. The light was exhibited in April 1879. The wick lamp was replaced by an equipment giving
occulting character and storm warning signal was added in 1932. The PV equipment (M/s. Chance
Bros., Birmingham) originally installed at Diu- Head lighthouse was shifted here in 1969 which
replaced the old equipment.
A 30 m tower was constructed at the present site east of the old tower. The PV equipment
supplied by M/s J. Stone India was installed on the new tower. It was commissioned into service in
March 1975. The PV light was replaced by an electrical light 1000W 230V incandescent lamp in
November 1992 and direct drive system was incorporated in June 1996. The DGPS equipments
manufactured by M/s Leica Geo System, USA as well as the 500 Watts Transmitters manufactured
by M/s Southern Avionics Co, USA were installed and commissioned in April, 2003. The light source
was replaced by a cluster of three 150W 230V Metal Halide lamps in November 2003. A Racon,
(Tideland make) transmitting Code 'G' was installed at the station in September 2004.
