Savaibet Lighthouse is situated on Savaibet island separated by a creek from its mother
island of Savaibet opposite Pipavav port. Approach to Savaibet lighthouse is by a boat from Pipavav
port which is connected to coastal highway by a 10 Km link road and by a BG rail line to national
railway network. Savaibet island was under the possession of the Portuguese from 1539 to 1739.
This region comprising Chanch, Savaibet, Pipavav and Rajula formed part of Bhavnagar state
prior to Independence. A lighthouse was built on Chanch point in 1920. It was decommissioned in
1967 when the Lighthouse at Savaibet started functioning. The lighthouse and baffle wall were
constructed on Savaibet during 1964-66. After completion of the installation of the equipment for
the main light, auxiliary light and fog signal, supplied by M/s BBT, Paris, were also commissioned
into service in March 1967. The auxiliary light with red sector has been provided at a lower level on
the same tower. The fog signal service was however withdrawn in 1987.
The DA gas emergency light source was replaced by halogen lamp in February 1994. The
direct drive by stepper motor was introduced in July 1996. The Racon (MACE origin) transmitting
code 'M' was installed on the tower in October 1999. The main Light source 500 W 110 V
incandescent lamp and emergency source were replaced by a cluster of three 70W 230V Metal
Halide lamps with solar powered batteries in August 2003.
